Why Groundswell?

Groundswell – a deep undulation of the ocean often caused by a distant storm. Groundswells occur in long, slow, regular rhythms — often 10 or 20 seconds between waves.

Like the ocean, people have natural rhythms (e.g. respiratory, hormonal, digestive) many of which operate beyond our conscious awareness. Exposure to traumatic events can change our body’s natural background rhythms; if these experiences persist, the nervous system can become dysregulated. The body is built for rest and digest — but stress and adversity push us into fight, flight or collapse. This shift is associated with visible changes in our body, for example:

  • Our breathing becomes shallow; we may begin to hyperventilate.
  • Our digestion is disrupted, reducing the amount of serotonin available to us.
  • Our muscle tone increases and our intercostal muscles stiffen, restricting the movement of our diaphragm.

The loss of connection with our body’s background rhythms means our sensory maps are fragmented. We lose our capacity to feel grounded, to feel at ease in our skin — and to be fully ourselves.

The medium is touch. The practice is deep listening. The intent is to trust the body — and honour its rhythms.

Dysregulated Nervous Systems

Some people feel it as anxiety, burnout or overwhelm — wired but tired, never quite settled. Others dissociate — spacing out or speeding up, unmoored from their body and its sensory landscape. Often it’s both. Craniosacral therapy works to restore a felt sense of safety — resetting and regulating the nervous system at the body’s own pace.

Dysfunctional Breathing Patterns

Shallow breathing and overbreathing are common responses to stress. Even athletes have inefficient breathing patterns, often without knowing it. These patterns place additional load on the spine and keep the nervous system in a heightened state. Craniosacral therapy helps people to develop a felt sense of their breathing pattern, and begin to change it.

Chronic Pain & Tension

Chronic pain and tension often reflect the body’s accumulated response to past experience — held long after the original cause has passed. By working with the nervous system, craniosacral therapy can help release these deeply held patterns, enabling people to discover what it feels like to live without them — sometimes for the first time.
